His own doctorate

Hassan Ali Emamirad defended his doctorate in 1973 at the Université Sorbonne Paris Nord — Paris XIII at the time — under the direction of Claude Williams Bardos. The dissertation, Les semi-groupes distributions de Beurling, became his first published paper the same year.

The subject was inherited as much as chosen: through Bardos the line runs back to Jacques-Louis Lions, whose own thesis was on boundary value problems in the theory of distributions, and from Lions to Laurent Schwartz, who founded that theory. Distribution semigroups remained the first of the four strands of his work.

About the advisor

Claude Bardos works on partial differential equations and kinetic theory. The Mathematics Genealogy Project records 36 doctoral students and 199 descendants. He later co-edited Contributions to Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (Pitman, 1983), the volume in which reference [10] appeared.
